Sunday Photo Fiction – The Waking Dream

“I saw that face again,” Jon remarked to his roommate.

“What, like in here?” Andy didn’t look up from his computer.

“No, it was a dream. But still…”

Andy kept playing his game and after a few minutes, Jon sighed and walked away.

**

As Jon drove home, he couldn’t stop yawning. He’d stayed longer than he was scheduled and he was drained. It didn’t help that he wasn’t sleeping.

He came to a stop at the next red light and started awake two seconds later. He looked up, grateful to see that the light was green. He pressed on the accelerator, but just as he pulled forward, he saw the face again. It was on the corner of the street, its body enveloped in darkness.

Jon slammed on his breaks, his heart pounding in his ears. When he looked again, it was gone.

**

Hunched in the corner of the interrogation room, Jon kept his arms folded and his mouth shut. He knew that if he told them, they were sure to lock him up forever.

The wispy voice rang in his ears, taunting him. The face hovered two inches in front of him.

“Kill them, Jon. Kill them all.”

The rules for Sunday Photo Fiction are to create a story/poem or something using around 200 words with the photo as a guide, although it doesn’t have to be center stage.  This one comes in at 201 words.

Song Lyric Sunday – Colors by iRival

So, I honestly wanted to find an actual color in my song choice this week, but when I came across this band and this particular song in my library, I just couldn’t help but share it.

I honestly don’t think iRival was around for very long; in fact, when I tried to look them up on the internet, I didn’t find a whole lot.  What I did find was as follows:

“iRival is an experimental rock band from Atlanta, GA formed in 2009 including members Eric Wilkes (vocals), Johnathan White (guitars/electronics), Rick Graham (bass) and Greg Levitt (drums). James Weaver, David Hart and Toby Weston have played live. They were formerly known as Esme.”  The website also noted that their official website was on MySpace of all things!

I have my daughter to thank for introducing me to this band, just like so many others.  She went to see one of her favorite bands in concert and it was a night I couldn’t go with her.  Her and her two friends stood outside the venue in very cold weather for hours so they could get a place in front.  She enjoyed the hell out of that night and I think I will always regret missing it.  She did bring home this band’s CD, though, and said they were amazing to watch live!  I will always be grateful that we shared a love of music for a short time, even if our tastes have changed quite a bit over the years.

I do hope you enjoy!

Lyrics found at LyricsMode
I honestly don’t know who wrote it, but I’m going to assume it was some combination of the band members.

The color is fading from your face
Hold on, we’ll get it back
Unless you don’t want to replace it
We’ll erase it
A new color is fading to your face
Hold on we’ll push it back
Unless you want to embrace it
I’ll just face it

So show me the world
And tell me that the colors I’ve been seeing
Are not while I was dreaming
Just show, show me your world
And tell me that the colors I’ve been needing
Are not the ones you’re keeping away

There’s something amiss and I’m on to it
I’m onto you
You tried on blue, didn’t you?
Oh no, oh no it’s coming
That’s the one color I can’t see
Hold it or hold on to me
You tried on blue, what’s the use?
Oh no, oh no it’s coming

So show me the world
And tell me that the colors I’ve been seeing
Are not while I was dreaming
Just show, show me your world
And tell me that the colors I’ve been needing
Are not the ones you’re keeping away

Am I see through, what’s the use
If we were fading long ago, long ago
That’s how it’s gonna go
If you don’t see me then you shouldn’t be
A part of my life
That’s how it’s gotta go
There’s something missing from your eyes
It’s killing off your smile
Keep pretending that you’re fine
But you just lost your shine

So show me the world
And tell me that the colors I’ve been seeing
Are not while I was dreaming
Just show, show me your world
And tell me that the colors I’ve been needing
Are not the ones you’re keeping away

Song Lyric Sunday Theme for 7/30/17

I went for a lovely walk the other night, and while the prevailing color was brown (there were a lot of empty fields), I was amazed at all the colors to be found.  I took a picture of a bush that had these dark red cone things, and the mountains were stunning greens, blues and browns.  And then there was the blue sky with the filmy clouds and the sun just starting to set.  It was a beautiful evening.

I was honestly surprised when I checked my list of themes that we hadn’t done this one yet, so I’m kind of excited about it.

So, without further rambling, our theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is colors.

As always, you can go your own way and post a song that has nothing to do with the prompt.  We’re all here sharing our love of music and lyrics, and most of all, having a great time!

If you would like to suggest a theme, I am open to suggestions.   Please either pop it in the comments or send me an email at helenvahdati@yahoo.com.

Here are the “rules”:

  • Post the lyrics to the song of your choice, whether it fits the theme or not
  • Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due and it’s honestly just a simple Google search
  • Make sure you also credit the singer/band and provide a link to where you found the lyrics
  • Link to the YouTube video, or pull it into your post so others can listen to the song
  • Ping back to this post or my own Song Lyric Sunday post
  • Read at least one other person’s blog so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process

Feel free to use the Song Lyric Sunday badge by copying it into your post or add it to your site to show you are participating.

SoCS – Out On A Limb

So, “limb” wasn’t a very inspiring prompt for me, but then I kept repeating the phrase “out on a limb” in my head and suddenly I had a poem.  Not only that, it came out of my head and onto the screen without any editing, so it is wholly SoCS.  I must be in a poetry mood lately.

But anyway, I hope you enjoy my take on the prompt.

Out On A Limb

Going out on a limb
You can’t catch me
All falling down
Around me

Going out on a limb
Trouble in paradise
The wind picks up
And begins to rise

Going out on a limb
I hold my head high
Come what may
I no longer accept the lie

Stream of Consciousness Saturday  is hosted by Linda G Hill.  Today’s prompt is “limb”.

Friday Fictioneers – That One Call

PHOTO PROMPT © J Hardy Carroll

One phone call.

I suppose most people have at least one special person in mind, so they eagerly reach for the phone and that connection that means they’re still sane.

Not me.

I realize as soon as I see the payphone that I made my choice hours ago and instead of reaching for the receiver, I turn to the officer and shake my head.  He leads me back to the holding cell in silence, leaving me to my thoughts.

I can’t imagine I’m the worst they’ve seen.  Although, if it weren’t for the savagery my father had inflicted on us, I’d probably think what I’d done to him was horrific too.

Friday Fictioneers is a weekly flash fiction prompt where we are given a photo and asked to write a 100 word story – beginning, middle and end.  This one came in at 116 words.

The Fragrance of Fish

I’m not sure I’ve ever heard someone describe the smell of fish as fragrant, or a “pleasant, sweet smell.”  Maybe there are people out there who think it is, but I’m not one of them.  Not only that, I have rarely enjoyed the taste of fish.

It’s annoying to go to dinner with seafood lovers.  Without fail, I get the question, “Well have you tried it?”  Or, “Just try it; you might find you like it.”  I promise you, I have tried seafood.  I’ve tried different kinds.  I’ve even enjoyed some on a few occasions, but it’s been a while and I’m thinking I was perhaps drunk at the time, so maybe the taste or the texture was masked by wine or whiskey or whatever I found myself drinking.

I was invited to a team lunch a few weeks ago and they ordered grilled octopus as an appetizer. I knew I wasn’t going to have any, but as soon as the plate was placed in front of me (I was sitting in the center of the table, so I guess the waiter thought that was a good place to put it), I actually almost got up and left.  It was like the thing had just come out of the ocean.  The tentacles were still visible for hell’s sake!  I shuddered a few times and did my best not to watch everyone else put those rubbery things in their mouth.

The worst is when you’re trying to find your happy place and everyone around you is trying to get you to “just try it.”  Oh, hell no!  And why don’t you just shut the hell up so I can enjoy my lunch, thank you very much!

Anyway, this weekend, my sister came to stay with us.  For some reason, she’s become an entirely different person when it comes to food.  She loves salmon and sushi, of all things.  She’d brought some salmon with her and was dying to make it for dinner on Saturday.  Since I was the only person in the house who didn’t like it, I decided I wouldn’t make everyone else suffer (and I really didn’t feel like making my own thing), so I went along.  Even as my sister was preparing it, I mentioned that it smelled disgusting, but it was no use.  It somehow made itself to the table with some rather delicious potatoes and green beans.

Now, I don’t know what it was about this weekend.  Maybe it was the sides that went along with it, or maybe it was some magical aura that my sister brought with her and sprinkled into the food, but I found myself eating salmon and rather enjoying it.  I even had it for leftovers the next day and liked it just as much.

I’m starting to wonder if it really is a mind-over-matter sort of thing.  If I will myself to like it and just eat it no matter what, then maybe I will actually enjoy it eventually.

I still can’t say I would have touched the octopus, but maybe more salmon… or halibut… or…

Only time will tell.

Song Lyric Sunday – Count On Me by Bruno Mars

I’m not huge into Bruno Mars these days, but after looking up a few songs for this week’s theme, I ran across this song and remembered how much I love it.  I definitely enjoyed his first CD a lot and his second not quite as much, but I still like both of them more than what  he’s doing now.  The guy can sing, there’s not doubt, and this song is just simple goodness.

I haven’t had a lot of really close friends in my life, but I hope those whom I do consider friends know that I will always be there, no matter what.

I hope you enjoy!

Lyrics found at Google Play Music

If you ever find yourself stuck in the middle of the sea,
I’ll sail the world to find you
If you ever find yourself lost in the dark and you can’t see,
I’ll be the light to guide you

Find out what we’re made of
When we are called to help our friends in need

You can count on me like one two three
I’ll be there
And I know when I need it I can count on you like four three two
You’ll be there
‘Cause that’s what friends are supposed to do, oh yeah

Whoa, whoa
Oh, oh
Yeah, yeah

If you tossin’ and you’re turnin’ and you just can’t fall asleep
I’ll sing a song
Beside you
And if you ever forget how much you really mean to me
Everyday I will
Remind you

Ooh
Find out what we’re made of
When we are called to help our friends in need

You can count on me like one two three
I’ll be there
And I know when I need it I can count on you like four three two
You’ll be there
‘Cause that’s what friends are supposed to do, oh yeah

Oh, oh
Yeah, yeah

You’ll always have my shoulder when you cry
I’ll never let go
Never say goodbye
You know you can

Count on me like one two three
I’ll be there
And I know when I need it I can count on you like four three two
And you’ll be there
‘Cause that’s what friends are supposed to do, oh yeah

Oh, oh
You can count on me ’cause I can count on you

Song Lyric Sunday Theme for 7/22/17

My sister asked me yesterday what the theme was going to be, but I honestly had no idea.  And you’d think she would have helped in some way, but she didn’t… she just wanted to know so she could start thinking of a song to post.

Well, I take that back.  Just by her being here, she helped me think of the theme for this week, so I suppose she gets my thanks, even though she didn’t help me with the actual thought process.

So, once again, without further rambling on about nothing, our theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is to post a song about friendship.

As always, you can go your own way and post a song that has nothing to do with the prompt.  We’re all here sharing our love of music and lyrics, and most of all, having a great time!

SoCS – My Sister, My Friend

There was a time a few years ago that I felt homeless, and to be honest, I sort of was.  I was living in a house where my kids lived, but there wasn’t really a place for me that was “finished” and I felt uncomfortable at best.

I did meet someone, though, who was living at my sister’s house.  Needless to say, I started spending a lot of time at my sister’s house.  I realize today that the joy I felt while I was at her house was way more about her than the guy I was dating.  My favorite thing was to wake up on Saturday mornings and cook breakfast with her and drink coffee.  The guys always just seemed to get in the way of our time together.

Anyway, I’m saying all this because my sister is staying with me for the weekend, and I couldn’t be more delighted.  When I first saw the prompt, I had no clue what to write about, but then a poem started to ramble in my head, so I thought I’d share it with you.  It’s mostly SoCS, but not completely.

My Sister, My Friend

Beginning
At the end
Struggling to find
A seal, unbroken
Losing sight
Losing touch

You called
I came
We built a bond
Everlasting
Rising to the ceiling
Breaking barriers

Sisters…
Friends
Forever

Stream of Consciousness Saturday  is hosted by Linda G Hill.  Today’s prompt is “sealing/ceiling.”
