Song Lyric Sunday – Writing’s On The Wall by Sam Smith

This one may be a stretch for the theme this week, but I’m not feeling my best today.  I came across this song a few weeks ago and really wanted to share it then, but it just didn’t fit.  I’m going to do my best to make it fit this week.

Letters are really all about the message, aren’t they?  Sometimes, life doesn’t give you clear messages, but when you look back on things, you realize that you should have known all along.  Hind sight is usually 20/20, but I believe the more experiences we have, the more we learn from them.  That doesn’t mean we always do better the next time, but those experiences can make us pause to try and see the writings on the wall.

I don’t know what it is about the James Bond songs, but they’re really a “thing”.  We were watching the beginning of one of the older ones a while ago and I realized that the song was spectacular!  I can’t remember it now, but luckily, I remembered this one.  I also shared the song from Skyfall already, so I guess I’m sort of obsessed.

Sam Smith has a dreamy voice and I just love this song.  I do hope you enjoy!

I’ve been here before
But always hit the floor
I’ve spent a lifetime running
And I always get away
But with you I’m feeling something
That makes me want to stay
I’m prepared for this
I never shoot to miss
But I feel like a storm is coming
If I’m gonna make it through the day
Then there’s no more use in running
This is something I gotta face
If I risk it all
Could you break my fall?
How do I live? How do I breathe?
When you’re not here I’m suffocating
I want to feel love, run through my blood
Tell me is this where I give it all up?
For you I have to risk it all
‘Cause the writing’s on the wall
A million shards of glass
That haunt me from my past
As the stars begin to gather
And the light begins to fade
When all hope begins to shatter
Know that I won’t be afraid
If I risk it all
Could you break my fall?
How do I live? How do I breathe?
When you’re not here I’m suffocating
I want to feel love, run through my blood
Tell me is this where I give it all up?
For you I have to risk it all
‘Cause the writing’s on the wall
The writing’s on the wall
How do I live? How do I breathe?
When you’re not here I’m suffocating
I want to feel love, run through my blood
Tell me is this where I give it all up?
How do I live? How do I breathe?
When you’re not here I’m suffocating
I want to feel love, run through my blood
Tell me is this where I give it all up?
For you I have to risk it all
‘Cause the writing’s on the wall

Song Lyric Sunday Theme for 2/25/18

It seems the whole household has been sick for way too long.  I finally got it again and thought I was getting better, but then today, I feel like I’m starting all over again.  Being sick is the worst!  At least I have my weekly blog prompt to keep me coming back; otherwise, I probably wouldn’t be sitting here typing.

Times have changed a lot.  I remember when I was a child, we used to have pen pals.  We’d send letters to people and hope to get one back.  It was so much fun to get a letter in the mail.  It almost compares to that sound you used to hear when you got an email.  It’s crazy that even emails are starting to become a thing of the past.  Now you have instant access to your loved ones, so there’s no real waiting.  I enjoy the way things are now, but I also enjoy the nostalgia of the past.

This, of course, brings us to our theme this week.  So, get your thinking caps on, break out your playlists and let’s get to work!  Our theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is “letters”.

As always, you can go your own way and post a song that has nothing to do with the prompt.  We’re all here sharing our love of music and lyrics, and most of all, having a great time!

I’m teaming up with Simply Marquessa  and her LyricalFictionFriday theme was based on today’s SLS theme.  Her posts go up on Thursday, so please check out her blog to delve into the world of music and fiction.

If you would like to suggest a theme, I am open to suggestions.   Please either pop it in the comments or send me an email at helenvahdati@yahoo.com.

Here are the “rules”:

  • Post the lyrics to the song of your choice, whether it fits the theme or not
  • Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due and it’s honestly just a simple Google search
  • Make sure you also credit the singer/band and provide a link to where you found the lyrics
  • Link to the YouTube video, or pull it into your post so others can listen to the song
  • Ping back to this post or my own Song Lyric Sunday post
  • Read at least one other person’s blog so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process

Feel free to use the Song Lyric Sunday badge by copying it into your post or add it to your site to show you are participating.

#LoveIsInDaBlog Day 20 – Spicy

I’ve been completely obsessed with the Olympics this year.  It’s to the point that I’m getting pretty bored with the things I don’t really like and I am absolutely sick of watching the same commercials over and over again.  However, I keep watching it.  My favorite event to watch is ice skating.  I see it as an art form, since it is, and I love watching it.

I love watching all the jumps, but I’m more interested in the way the movements match the music and how the partners (if it’s partnered) respond and react to one another.  I’ve watched some pretty amazing things this year, but none compare to last night’s ice dancing free skate.  Holy cow!  I was on pins and needles watching the last few dances.

The best one I’ve seen probably ever was Virtue and Moir from Canada.  If you haven’t watched it, I’ve been instructed to include a YouTube video in today’s post, so you are in luck!  When I was looking for the video, I saw a tag-line for a video that said something about one of their moves being “too hot for the Olympics”.  I can see where this comment is coming from because the routine is spicy, but it is also very tastefully done.  I love how it pushed the edges, but I feel they kept it balanced in a masterful way.

I will compare it to the Russian pair who skated last week.  Their final dance music was Christina Aguilera’s “Nasty, Naughty Boy” which I thought was ridiculous on all sorts of levels.  I honestly couldn’t believe they picked that music and the whole thing was just off, in my opinion.  Even the commentators mentioned that their music didn’t do them any favors.

Speaking of the commentators, has anyone else wondered what new spiciness Johnny Weir will concoct the next time we see him?  I’m sitting here watching the ladies short program as I type this and I’m in awe of his newest get-up.  He is spicy on all sorts of levels and I love it!

Anyway, here is the video.  The only thing I could find that included the whole routine was Virtue and Moir performing at the Canadian Nationals this year, so it isn’t quite the same because I think their performance last night was ridiculously good; but, you’ll get the spicy with the music and their chemistry

I obviously do not have any rights to the video. No copyright infringement intended.

#LoveIsInDaBlog Day 18 – A Question of Taste

As promised, I’m going to fill you in on how our little episode of Chopped went yesterday.  It all turned out much better than I could have imagined.  The part that really surprised me was that they all finished their dishes way ahead of the thirty minute time-frame.  When we first started, we were thinking that we shouldn’t time  it because we didn’t want there to be too much pressure, but it ended up not really mattering.

I put all the “baskets” together and then the three chefs threw some dice to determine the order.  My sister went first and she chose a bag at random.  She ended up with tomatillos, zucchini bread, Clementine Izze (sparkling fruit juice) and scallops.  Out of all the cooks, I feel like she looked the most chef-like.  She used a blender and one of those little grinder things.  It was so much fun to watch her put those ingredients together.  Her dish ended up being way too sweet (too much zucchini bread) but we all agreed that her dish had the best presentation.

My hubby went next.  His bag had rainbow chard, cinnamon roll, Grapefruit Izze and shrimp.  He looked like a professional!  He was super calm and basically did a fabulous one-pot wonder.  I kept reminding him to not forget ingredients, but he was completely under control.  I think he finished with ten minutes to spare.  We all agreed that his had the most balanced flavor.

(It’s crazy to me how we all sounded just like the Chopped judges.  “There’s too much of this” or “I like how this ingredient did this” or “I can’t taste the fruit juice at all”.)

My sister-in-law went last.  I think she probably had the hardest basket.  She had to cook with beets, pumpkin bread, Blackberry Izze and beef tenderloin.  She did a vegetable hash and charred the pumpkin bread and put it on top of the beef.  The beef was undercooked, but at least it wasn’t blue.   Despite that, I think I liked the flavor of hers the most.  I really loved the pumpkin bread with the meat, even though that sounds really weird just thinking about it now.

Everyone agreed that it was a great time and I believe we are planning to do it again soon.  I enjoyed judging and trying each dish, but I can honestly say that I wouldn’t enjoy the cooking aspect of it.  I just don’t understand how ingredients work and how to use an ingredient in a different way. What I can say is that everything was perfectly edible.  I was honestly slightly worried that things would taste awful.

I’m kicking myself now that I completely forgot to take pictures!  How awful is that?  I guess you will all just have to use your imaginations or have a little episode of Chopped on your own and try to throw a dish together using the four ingredients they had to use.  If you do, I hope you have fun, and let me know how it goes!

Song Lyric Sunday – Eyes Wide Open by Gotye

This theme was pretty tough for me.  I honestly couldn’t think of a song, so I went to Google and started looking around.  I didn’t want to post something that was too obvious, but the more I looked, the more frustrated I got.

I finally came across this artist and this song.  I recognized the artist, but I hadn’t heard this song until today.  I found it compelling; not only the video, but the lyrics as well.  It’s sad to think that we could end up in this place.  Will water ever run out?  Will we take so much from the Earth that nothing is left but dust and ashes?

I think the conversation is very real and needs to be had.  There is so much beauty on this Earth.  It’s about time we start realizing that it’s worth taking care of.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the video and the song as much as I did.

With our eyes wide open, we
With our eyes wide open, we
So this is the end of the story,
Everything we had, everything we did,
Is buried in dust,
And this dust is all that’s left of us.
But only a few ever worried.
Well the signs were clear, they had no idea.
You just get used to living in fear,
Or give up when you can’t even picture your future.
We walk the plank with our eyes wide open.
We walk the plank with our eyes wide open, we
(Walk the plank with our eyes wide open, we)
Yeah, we walk the plank with our eyes wide open, we
(Walk the plank with our eyes wide open.)
Some people offered up answers.
We made out like we heard, they were only words.
They didn’t add up to a change in the way we were living,
And the saddest thing is all of it could have been avoided.
But it was like to stop consuming is to stop being human,
You’ll want to make a change if you won’t.
We’re all in the same boat, staying afloat for the moment.
We walk the plank with our eyes wide open, we
(Walk the plank with our eyes wide open, we)
Yeah we walk the plank with our eyes wide open, we
(Walk the plank with our eyes wide open.)
We walk the plank with our eyes wide open,
We walk the plank with our eyes wide open,
We walk the plank with our eyes wide open, we
With our eyes wide open, we walk the plank, we walk the plank.
With our eyes wide open, we walk the plank, we walk the plank, we walk the plank.
With our eyes wide open, we walk the plank, we walk the plank.
That was the end of the story.

Song Lyric Sunday Theme for 2/18/18

I came up with the themes for Song Lyric Sunday for February about two months ago.  I’ve enjoyed everything so far, but I checked today’s theme and was pretty dumb-founded.  I suppose it just wasn’t what I was expecting, especially considering I’ve been doing the whole “love” thing this month thanks to Bee.

However, now that I’m settling into the idea, it’s starting to grow on me.  It also fits in with love in so many ways.  People aren’t the only ones who need love.  I know there’s a heated debate about the environment and global warming and no matter which side you land on, I think there’s something to be said for loving and appreciating the world around us.

That being said, let’s do some exploring this week.  So, get your thinking caps on, break out your playlists and let’s get to work!  Our theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is “Earth”.

As always, you can go your own way and post a song that has nothing to do with the prompt.  We’re all here sharing our love of music and lyrics, and most of all, having a great time!

SoCS and #LoveIsInDaBlog Day 17 – Passionately calling for a change to the idea of “his and hers”

Anyone who knows me realizes pretty quickly that I’m a passionate person.  When I feel something, I tend to feel it wholeheartedly.  Sure there are things that I’m blah about, but when I care, I’m passionate about it.

I think about how I raised my kids, and honestly, if I had to do it all over again, there are some things I would change.  Granted, some of the decisions weren’t completely mine to make.  Now that I’m truly thinking about it, I did try to let my kids explore, but that wasn’t always allowed by their dad; such as my boys playing with dolls.  Their dad would make comments and say things, and before too long, they just stopped doing it.  If dad doesn’t approve, then it isn’t OK.  Some of it was friends, too, though.  Kids can be so mean, but some of that can be traced directly back to their parents and what they are being taught at home.

I hate the idea that gender is such a “thing”.  Why is it bad for me to lift heavy things?  Why are women not treated them same in the military?  It’s so frustrating that so many things have become “his and hers”.  It’s not as bad as an adult, necessarily, but it’s truly awful for kids.

When my daughter was about ten, she decided that she didn’t want to wear girl’s clothes, not even underwear.  It was really hard at first, but there was a point that I decided it didn’t matter.  The more I fought it, the more she rebelled, so I decided to embrace it.  I bought her the clothes she wanted to wear and accepted her for who she wanted to be.  She wore dreadlocks in her hair and I’m pretty sure she didn’t wear shoes her entire sophomore year of high school.  She eventually grew out of it and now she loves to pretty up.  She will always have that tough side to her though, which I find completely endearing.

She’s faced a lot of bias at her school.  She works in a scene shop and most guys freak out when she tries to lift things or, I don’t know, use a power tool.  It’s ridiculous and I wish the world was different for her, but it’s something I’ve dealt with my whole life too.

It can be hard for boys as well, especially when they decide to do something other than what is considered “a boy thing”.  The thing that I’ve realized is that it’s rooted deep in our society, and while there are changes being made, I think it is going to take a long time to change it completely.

I honestly didn’t mean for this to turn into a rant, but there is that passion I warned you about in the very beginning.
