Song Lyric Sunday – Into the West by Annie Lennox

I don’t even know how I happened onto this song today.  I was looking up different bands, trying to find the word “shadow” in the lyrics of songs.  I don’t know if I glanced at the side bar on YouTube where they have recommended videos and saw Lord of the Rings, but suddenly I realized that the Lord of the Rings soundtracks would definitely have songs with shadows in them.

I was totally right!  I almost went with the song from The Fellowship of the Ring, but then I remembered this one.  It’s from Return of the King and is definitely one of my favorite songs.  My sister and I actually sang this song at my aunt’s funeral.  It was one of those songs that I couldn’t get through without crying, but I sure gave it my best shot.

The song was written by Annie Lennox, Fran Walsh and Howard Shore.  It played at one of the most poignant parts of the movie and it will forever be etched in my memory and heart.

I hope you enjoy (the lyrics are in the video)!

  1. This is a great song and I will have to pay more attention to this end-credit song the next time that I watch this movie. The movies are really long and I think that by the time this song came on my mind had already turned to mush.

    • I get that. I honestly loved the music so much that I ended up buying some piano sheet music with this song included. I also heard it when she performed it at the Oscars, so I don’t blame anyone for not sitting through the credits just to listen to this song. 😊

  2. My favorite Annie Lennox song from one of my favorite movies!

It has a haunting beauty and I agree – when it’s played during the movie it can move me to tears. It invokes thoughts of finality and a new beginning at the same time. Excellent choice! 💯

  4. To be entirely fair I’ve never watched the movies (too long for my taste) nor did I much follow Annie Lennox in her post-Eurithmics days, but this song hit me hard. Reminded me of how I felt when I lost my great-grandmother. It’s been 15+ years but it doesn’t seem that way.

Man, way to make me cry now. LOL!!!

  5. So many people couldn’t make it through that movie, let alone all three, to get to this song, but I love it so much. Love that the three of them wrote it together. Her best work. It was out when they lost a friend at the time, a young man with cancer, or so the director/writer track along with the extended film said. Extra sad because it is loosely based for a real loss of life. The whole waves into the horizon is more of a comfort for me these days, when it comes to thoughts of religion, than anything else. Great choice Helen.

  6. Pretty song. For some reason I don’t remember any songs at all in th LOTR movies. I know I watched them, and somewhat liked them. The battle scenes just put me to sleep, though. I liked the books much better. So lovely that you and your sister sang it at your aunt’s funeral.
