Song Lyric Sunday – Nobody’s Perfect by Jessie J

I’ve been sitting at my computer combing through my library for hours now.  I’m having a hell of a time, but it’s been super difficult to find a song to fit the theme.  I suppose I knew it would be a challenge, but it’s been fun all the same.

When I finally landed on this one, I was super excited because it fits perfectly, I just hope it isn’t too obvious.

Facing your demons and realizing when you screw up is hard.  I think this song perfectly emotes that feeling and the lyrics are genius.  I also believe that Jessie J is a master and her voice is amazing.

Song Lyric Sunday Theme for 4/30/17

I can’t even believe it’s Saturday again.  To be honest, the past week is sort of a blur.  I’m just wondering when my life will return to some semblance of “normal”, but until it does, I’m just trying to make it through each day, putting one foot in front of the other.

Music seems to help.  It’s amazing to me how much music can help when you find yourself in the depths of dark thoughts.  Sometimes music can make those thoughts worse, but sometimes it just lifts you up and you’re better for the listening.

Which sort of, in a round about way, brings me to the theme this week.  I’ve been thinking about it and I think a lot of songs can fall into the theme, but I think it might be one you’ll have to think about.  I know I’ve been scanning my music library in search of something to fit, but I figured this is all about the challenge, right?

So, our theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is to post a song about consequences, good or bad.

SoCS – A bad sense of distance and backyard woes

Do you know that thing that people do when they say, “He was standing about 20 feet away”; or, “She ran about 20 yards”…?  I can’t do that.  I have no sense of distance.  I’d probably make a terrible witness, especially if I had to be any judge of how far away things were.  The only thing that sort of put it into perspective for me was to imagine a football field, but even then, I can really only gauge 100 yards, ya know?  I can tell you that football became much easier to watch when they started adding that fake yellow line to let you know where the first down was.  Otherwise, I was lost.

When my fiance and I were looking for a house, the one thing we didn’t really want was a backyard; which is funny because most people are looking for that (at least where I live).  I remember many conversations that went exactly the same way: “The house was beautiful, but did you see that yard?  It was awful!  Can you imagine the work that will go into that?”

We finally ended up in a place where the yard is very small and the HOA does all the yard work except for this little area in front of the house.  I’ve been looking at that area for a few weeks now wondering what the hell I’m going to do with it.  I know I need to pull weeds, but other than that?  I sure hope those little bushes and things know what to do with themselves because I don’t have the first clue!

I’m a creative person, but I’ve never understood the inner workings of grass and plants and things.  I can’t even keep a houseplant alive.  Except maybe the one that I don’t even know the name of that tends to grow whether it’s watered or not.  Sure, it isn’t quite as green or cute when its lacking water, but somehow it keeps itself growing.  Luckily, one of the plants we have is that type and it seems to be doing okay, even with the lack of love I tend to give it.

My fiance is better with houseplants, but not by much.  I remember about every other week or so to ask if they’ve been watered.  Sometimes they have and sometimes not.

I’m also sitting here looking out the basement window and realizing that we also have these window wells that we need to figure out.  Why is it that green things and other things grow everywhere?  And why is it that when you are out in nature (hiking for instance) those things are all sorts of beautiful, but when they show up in places you don’t want them, they’re a pain in the ass!

Well, in true SoCS style, I am now completely off topic.  But, I’m feeling somewhat better for getting all that off my mind, so thanks for listening.  I hop you all have a fantastic Saturday!

Song Lyric Sunday – Let’s Hurt Tonight by One Republic

I know you all know this, but relationships are just hard.  I’ve always told myself that love is worth it, though.  Sometimes, we have to accept that there will be pain in order to move to the next step.

I’ve always believed that just talking it through will solve most any problem in a relationship, but that isn’t always true.  While I agree with the sentiment behind this song, I also realize it isn’t always possible to lock the door and hash it out until there’s a resolution.

I was a huge fan of One Republic when they first came out, but I saw them perform live on TV and was seriously disappointed.  Perhaps that’s changed and they’ve grown, but regardless, I found this song captivating.

Also, I heard it for the first time while watching the movie Collateral Beauty.  If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it.  It’s a heart breaker, but the message is simply beautiful.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the beauty of the song and remember to hold on to love, even through the pain.

I’m really happy this last week is finally over.  It wasn’t the best week I’ve ever had, and I ended it with a stomach bug, which is still making my life miserable.  I’m hoping a little music will help with my suffering. 🙂

I thought a little bit about the theme earlier in the week, but then completely forgot about it until today.  I might have picked something entirely different then, but after the week I’ve had, this one seems fitting.

It’s something I’ve been thinking a lot about this year and I almost used the theme before, but it somehow fits what’s been happening in my life recently – not just physically, but emotionally as well.

SoCS on Sunday – MooDoo

I’ve been wanting to spend more time here on the blog.  I’ve been managing to keep up with Song Lyric Sunday, but that’s about it.  I feel sort of direction-less when it comes to writing and my blog.  I want to write more, but I feel like my energy should be spent on that book that I’m not really writing right now.  So, do I post more on the blog or continue down this path of not really doing anything?

It’s a conundrum for sure.  I suppose it’s good that I’m recognizing what’s going on.  Now the next step is to actually do something about it.  I’m just wondering when I actually will…

So, I wasn’t really planning on SoCS this week, but then I happened to see some of the posts from yesterday and realized that I surprisingly had something to write about the word “moo”.

Yesterday was a sad day for our family.  We met at the cemetery to mourn the loss of my nephew exactly 13 years ago.  I picked up Andru from his Dad’s house (it ended up just being me and him since Jaxon had to work and my fiance wasn’t ready to stand out in cold weather for an indeterminate amount of time) and from the second I picked him up, he talked to me about his computer game.

I feel like a terrible mother sometimes, but when he starts talking and keeps going on and on about a game that, while I’ve seen him play, I don’t have much interest in, it sort of all starts to blend together at a certain point.  He finally realized how much he’d been talking and asked if we could stop to get a drink.  We barely made it back in the car before he started in again.

I actually stopped him and reminded him he needed water… He managed to figure out how to open his water and then kept talking.  When we finally made it to the cemetery, I was happy to hand him off to his cousin.  They spent the rest of the afternoon talking and sharing everything about their games and whatever else teenage boys share.

We always go to lunch afterwards and since we were all going to the same place, both boys ended up in the car with me and I happened to overhear Andru tell his cousin about his online screen name, which is MooDoo.  When he first started playing games on the computer, he was young and he loved the name “Flames”.  I’m not sure MooDoo is a step up from that, but I think he believes it is.  Listening him tell his cousin how he came up with the name, I think about as much thought went into it as went into “Flames”… maybe even less.

But he seems to love his online gaming name and it gave me something to tell you all for this version of SoCS on Sunday.

Song Lyric Sunday – When the Rain Comes by Citizen Zero

Citizen Zero has been my new favorite band for a while now.  When I first heard their album last year, I immediately fell in love and couldn’t wait to see them live in concert.  Surprisingly, I didn’t have to wait as long as I thought  I would.  They actually came to our city in February and I bought tickets almost the same day I found out.

As I’ve mentioned, the guitarist, Sammy, is my co-worker’s son.  I met him after the concert while standing in line for merchandise.  Not only is he freaking AMAZING on the guitar, he is also the most humble, sweetest guy.

Listening to this song, I’m reminded that although rain can be dark and dreary, it can also be beautiful in its gloom.  When it comes to an end, it leaves the world a little fresher and cleaner then when it arrived.  I don’t think I could live in a climate with constant rain, but I would miss it if I never experienced it again.

So, here’s to my renewed love for rain.  I hope you enjoy the song and the band as much as I do!

Song Lyric Sunday Theme for 4/16/17

I just realized (again) that tomorrow is Easter.  I don’t know why I keep forgetting, except that I’m not huge into celebrating holidays, so I’m going to apologize in advance if you were hoping for a holiday theme.  Now that I’m thinking about it, I’m not sure I would have known what to pick to match this particular holiday…

I’ve been thinking about the theme I am choosing for a while and it really fit a few weeks ago, but I didn’t use it a few weeks ago because I wanted something more lighthearted.  Maybe you all will surprise me and post something fun, which is why I’m choosing it for this week.

I don’t know about the weather in your area, but this spring we have had a ton of rain.  We’ve pretty much had rain about every other day, which I suppose is good that we get some sunny days in between.  Today has been sunny but not particularly warm, but I’m not complaining because sunny days are welcome right now.

Which, of course brings us to our theme.  Our theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is to post a song about rain, or a song that has “rain” in the title or lyrics.

Song Lyric Sunday – Highway 20 Ride by Zac Brown Band

I immediately thought of two different songs when I posted the theme yesterday – the song I heard when  I thought of the theme, and another long-time favorite.  I was having a hard time choosing between the two, so I asked my fiance for help.  It’s pretty amazing to me how a song can have so much meaning for one person, but it’s only passing good to someone else.

Even as I’m sitting here writing this, I’m thinking of just posting both songs (even though it’s not something I’ve ever done and I really don’t want to do it) because one of them has a deeper meaning for me, but the other one really hit home with my fiance.

The other thing I’ll note is that when I first thought of the theme, I was thinking of happy road trip songs, you know?  But when I really dug into the lyrics and songs I was thinking of,  I realized that they were gloomy and sad.  I’m still going to post them, but just know that I’m apologizing for the mood before I even get started.

So, now that I’m here, I’ve decided to feature one song, but mention the other at the end.  (Why is this post feeling so SoCS today?)

My kiddos got really into the Zac Brown Band a few years ago, so I heard a lot of their music.  While I’m not too excited about country these days, I will admit that I do love these guys.  I love their harmonies and their lyrics.

I had no idea what this song was actually about until I read the lyrics yesterday.  I will say that even as a divorced parent with children, I’ve never really experienced this feeling.  I’ve just always known that my kids were home when they were with me, and they were home when they were with their dad.  I can’t say it’s always been easy, and perhaps my kids feel differently, but I hope they always know that we did our best to keep the status quo for them, even after our marriage fell apart.

Song Lyric Sunday Theme for 4/9/17

I’m still feeling like I haven’t quite found my rhythm this year yet and it’s already April.  Perhaps I should just accept where I’m at and roll with what life is  throwing at me right now.  That being said, I’m super happy that there is always music to be found.

I’ve been driving my fiance’s car a little bit because he didn’t want it to be too neglected, and it has this funny way of just starting up music even when I didn’t actually push play.  Bluetooth is a scary, amazing thing, isn’t it?

Anyway, my music randomly played a song and a band that I don’t normally listen to, but I have in there because Jaxon used to love them.  The good news is, it helped me come up with the theme for this week, and I’m actually quite excited about it.

Before I present it to you, though, I just want to throw out a huge thanks to you guys for opening up my mind and heart to 80’s music last week.  It was an amazing ride for me – sometimes hard, but mostly wonderful.  I didn’t realize how much I was missing by running away from it for so long.
