Song Lyric Sunday – Yellow by Coldplay

I’m thinking this is fast becoming my most featured band for SLS. However, I wouldn’t say they were my all-time favorite band, which is sort of funny if you think about it. I guess their songs just seem to fit the themes. This one became the antithesis of the theme, though, so I’m sort of breaking my own rules.

I’ll have to admit that I wasn’t very excited about the theme today. I was just running out of time and fresh out of good ideas, so I went with it. It doesn’t seem to have affected you all too much, since everyone seems to have come up with something, whether it fit the theme or not. (I have no idea if they do since I haven’t made the time to listen to everyone’s posts, but you know me… I’ll get to them).

Anyway, this song. I decided to go with it because it is basically a song without a plan. If you read the lyrics, it’s hard to catch any meaning, although I’ve attached plenty of meaning to them as I am wont to do. I looked it up on Wikipedia, and this is what Chris Martin said about it when he was on The Howard Stern Show:

The word “yellow” has absolutely no meaning whatsoever and while writing the rest of the song he tried his best to change “yellow” to something else since every lyric before yellow made no sense but in the end the word “yellow” just sounded right. Martin also told Stern that through the years depending on the attitude and manner of whoever interviews him, he would make up some story about a song or album titles just to move on to the next question. Martin applauded Stern saying “I like you, Howard, so that’s the first time I’ve ever told anyone the truth behind ‘Yellow’.”

Song Lyric Sunday Theme for 8/26/18

I know I’ve spoken before about how I come up with the theme. Today, it was when I started thinking about my cell phone plan. We just changed it recently and I was wondering when my eldest would actually start paying me for her phone, since she’s a college graduate and moving to L.A. to start her big girl job in a week.

Then, randomly, my sister and I went looking for duck breast to make a planned dinner tonight. Apparently there’s not many people in or around SLC who eat duck. We went to a few places and called about ten. Most stores that focus solely on meat were closed on Saturdays and Sundays. We finally just gave up. It was frustrating and annoying, but we settled on a different plan. You know what they say about the best laid plans and all that.

Since I’ve been preparing for a dinner party all day and haven’t had much time to focus on the theme, I finally decided that my first thought was the best. It also really fit with my day today, which doesn’t hurt, I suppose.

With that, we’ll just get right to it. Let’s put on our thinking caps, break out our playlists and get to work!  Our theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is plan.

Song Lyric Sunday – Big White Room by Jessie J

Fear is a pretty powerful thing. I find it interesting that some scary movies out there actually deal with overcoming fear even while they’re trying to scare you to death. Gotta love those jump-scares though. They get me almost every time.

I first started thinking about songs with zombies and other types of scary movie horrors, but then I came across this song this morning and I knew it was going to be my song. I remember the first time my daughter played it for me. We were in the car, driving home from school. I cried while I was listening to it. Not only does Jessie J sing it masterfully (especially in the live, acoustic version), but the lyrics are powerful. They don’t contain the word “fear”, but they do refer to a genuine fear that I’ve dealt with in the past.

Song Lyric Sunday Theme for 8/19/18

I honestly had no idea what to post as a theme today. It’s not something I think about all the time, although I’m obsessive enough to do it. However, when I do think about it, usually something pops into my head and it just works. Today has been different. Today, my brain has been relatively silent.

I decided to watch a movie, since I hadn’t been struck by creative genius, and then it came to me. My hubby and I love horror movies, and we just watched a doozy on Netflix. I don’t even mean that in a good way. It was watchable, but just barely. It did get me to thinking, though, which is a good thing when I’m trying to come up with the theme. I just hope it isn’t too difficult.

With that, we’ll just get right to it. Let’s put on our thinking caps, break out our playlists and get to work!  Our theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is fear.

The best news for a writer that just has to be shared!

It is really weird for me to do this, because I’m not one to stand in the spotlight, but I just have to share the good news. I was approached by a publishing company several months ago to submit some of my writing, which I did. Not knowing the process or how long it could take, I had pretty much given up on it when I received the email that one of my short stories was accepted.

My story, Mirror’s Curse, will be featured in the book, Utah’s Emerging Writers: An Anthology! It is actually available for pre-order now, so if you’d like to check it out and some other stellar stories, please click here. I guess this means that I actually need to dig in and write!

On the Street Where I Live

You know how you try to take the perfect picture of the sunset, but you live in the city and you just can’t get it without including the houses and cars parked on your street? It didn’t stop me from trying. However, I actually think the pictures with the houses and cars turned out better. What do you think?

Then there’s the one where you just decide to embrace it and even add a little crazy of your own by flipping things a little bit.

Song Lyric Sunday – Rest Stop by Matchbox Twenty

This is the first song that came to mind when I was thinking about the theme, even though the word “drive” isn’t found in the song. I figured it fit because “rest stop”. I was also shocked that I hadn’t posted it yet. As sad as it is, it is honestly one of my favorite Matchbox songs. I think the lyrics are brilliant.

I was looking around on the Internet and found an article on American Songwriter where Rob Thomas says the following about his lyrics: “I’m just the goofiest, happiest to be here guy, and I’m Southern. We are the geeks of the music industry,” he says of his band. “We are really happy to be here…Whenever I write, I’ll just have it represent the worst part of me. Then I can be this way (happy) the rest of the time. I only discover the dark side of me when I write. The rest of the time I can be a pretty happy me.”

I feel like this is how I write and I suppose that’s why I feel so connected to this band and their lyrics. I do hope you enjoy!

Song Lyric Sunday Theme for 8/12/18

I just love road trips. I’m not sure if I’m among the minority, but I do love being in the car, heading down the highway. It’s such a simple thing; the long road ahead and all you have to worry about is passing the guy in front of you who’s going too slow, or getting cut off by a semi when they decide to pass an even slower semi so you have to drastically reduce your speed and try not to swear too much as you wait for them to get back over. It’s pretty funny, actually, because it’s not like you have to be anywhere at any given time.

This road trip was especially amazing because I shared it with my sister and a rather great audio book that we didn’t manage to finish. It will always be a happy memory and one I will cherish for years to come.

As amazing as it all was, it was nice to come home and get back into the swing of things. Today is no exception. Can you believe it’s that time again? Song Lyric Sunday – Love Drunk by Boys Like Girls

I know I’m in vacation mode, but I didn’t think it would be this hard to find a song that I wanted to post. I also wanted to stick with the word “drink” but this is the only song that came to mind. At least it’s the word, just in a different tense (let’s just ignore the fact that it actually changes the meaning of the word..).

It isn’t my favorite song or band and the lyrics are far from deep, but I suppose it’s OK to keep things lighter on this blog of mine sometimes. It is a fun song and it got me moving this morning.

I’m on vacation! And I have to tell you, it is a lovely place to be. I’m also with my sister, visiting another sister and we’re having the best time. We just finished making and eating a yummy dinner and now we are going to relax and share even more sister time. It’s been everything I’d hoped and even more. I’ll be sad when it comes to an end.

None of that has anything to do with the theme this week. I honestly decided on the theme this morning while talking. It is similar to one I’ve used in the past, but I think it’s different enough to make it’s own weekly share.
